Many of the artist's works contain Winter in their title and indeed he exhibited a work titled 'Winter Gate - Evening' at the RSA AX in 1981 (cat.413). He adopts a square format for many of these works and deploys a restrained low key palette applied in generally flat colour fields which, combined with their precisely drawn compositions, convincingly capture the bleakness of areas of remote farmland or moorland under snow.
