Fairgrieve, James Hanratty, RSA RSW

b. 1944

Born in Prestonpans, East Lothian, Fairgrieve studied at Edinburgh College of Art between (1962 -1966). He spent a postgraduate year at the college and was awarded a travelling scholarship to Italy for six months in 1969. In 1970 he became a member of the Society of Scottish Artists. He is a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, and served as President of the Society of Scottish Artists (1978-80). He has always painted in meticulous, neat realist style. His earlier work in the 1970s consisted of enigmatic landscapes and his more recent work has focused on still life compositions. He began to work as a teacher of painting and drawing at Edinburgh College of Art in the 1970s and remained there until he took early retirement in 1998. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1976 and an Academician in 2004.
