Gibb was a student in the RSA Life School every year from 1893-4 to 1895-6 inc.
In 1894 he was awarded the Chalmers Bursary, sharing it jointly with C S Brown. In 1895 he won it outright and in 1896 took the Chalmers-Jervise Prize for the best drawing from the Life. The Visitors to the RSA Life School during his time were; Hugh Cameron; Robert Alexander; William Hole and Robert McGregor (1893-4); J Lawton Wingate; T Austen Brown; C Martin Hardie and W D McKay (1894-5) and C Martin Hardie; W D McKay; Otto Leyde and J Campbell Noble (1895-6)
