Self portrait
Artist: Giles, James, RSA · 1801-1870
The present work makes interesting comparison with the 'Self Portrait in a Maroon Coat and Crimson Beret' of 1846 [National Trust For Scotland, Fyvie Castle, acc.no.84.112, oil on canvas, 59 x 49.2cm] which shows a near identical 3/4 view but with the body turned to the right. The NTS Fyvie painting is of fuller colour in the cheeks and is also painted as a feigned oval.
