Benares and the Holy River

"In 1897 Bauer set foot in India. During this journey, the divergent sides of his artistry - painting, watercolor painting, etching and drawing, but also his writing and illustrating - came together in a unique way. The Chronicle published the accounts of his travels. Soon after arriving, Bauer fell under the spell of the country. His journey began in Bombay, where he only stayed briefly because of plague. He traveled by train to Benares and to Agra, where he was enraptured at the sight of the Taj Mahal. Other places and sights in the north and center of the country followed. In early 1898, before the hot season started, he returned to the Netherlands. He wrote: 'Now comes the second pleasure, that of memory, more beautiful than reality. The less beautiful and the western aftertaste disappears, and what remains is a wonderland of palaces and temples, populated with endless rows of colorfully dressed Orientals, of richly dressed horse processions, of camels and herds of elephants.
