Inverness
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
On 1 September 1925 Gillies took up a one year probationary post as art teacher at Inverness Academy, and took lodgings with a Miss Fraser. He remained for just short of the year, receiving a call to join the teaching staff at Edinburgh College of Art shortly before his probationary year ended.
W Gordon Smith suggests the present work was painted early in 1925 (though he only commenced his post that September) and describes it as; "assembling a collage of local images in the L'hote manner."
