Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973

The 1970 Gillies Retrospective exhibition featured an oil painting of this title, with a note in the catalogue that it was painted in 1917 during the artist's first year at Edinburgh college of Art.

The present work may be the a related study for that work which was described as oil on canvas, 12 x 14 inches, lent by the artist.
