The Sisters

Artist: Nicholson, William, RSA · 1781-1844

This is a portrait of the artist's daughters. Nicholson, at the age of 50 and established as a portrait painter married Maria Lamb (birth untraced c.1806, daughter of William Lamb, upholsterer) in Edinburgh on 1821-08-13. The couple had three daughters and two sons all born in Edinburgh and baptised as follows; Walter (1825-04-27), Agnes Reid (1826-04-27), Mary Jane (1828-06-19, bur 1830-06-22), Maria (1830-07-30), and William (1840-10-31) who registered his mother's death (d.1873-01-08, Edinburgh, aged 68 years). The subject of the present work therefore is most likely to be Agnes Reid Nicholson and Maria Nicholson.
