Brown was a student in the RSA Life School every year from 1878-9 to 1882-3 inc.
In 1881 he was awarded the Keith Prize and the Maclaine-Watters Medal. In 1882 he was awarded The Chalmers Prize and the Prize for the Best Drawing from the Life. Maclaine-Watters Medal and shared the Stuart Prize with W Skeoch Cumming. In 1893 he was awarded an Extra Prize for Paintinga prize for the second best drawing from the life and in 1880 took prizes for the second best Painting from the Life (with this study); Best Drawing from the Life, and shared the Stuart Prize with Thomas Stuart Burnett.
