Bridge of the Scaligers, Verona

Printer: Nammari, Leena Rustom, RSA · b. 1970

an impression taken from William Wilson's original copper printing plate by Leena Nammari during the Borders Art Fair 2019, held in Kelso Town Hall over the weekend of 15-17 March 2019. The high viewpoint suggests that Wilson was at the top of the bridge's gate tower on the South bank of the Adige River looking North across the red brick and white marble Ponte Scaligeor (Ponte di Castel Vecchio) as built in 1354 to the design of Guglielmo Bevilacqua, who was reputedly gifted a sword that had belonged to St Martin. In its day it was the largest span bridge in the world. The bridge was destroyed by retreating German army troops on 1945-04-24, during the Second World War, but was faithfully rebuilt between 1949 and 1951.
