Fraser was a student in the RSA Life School every year from 1889-90 to 1891-2 inc.
In 1891 he was awarded the Chalmers Bursary. The RSA Annual Report for that year records; “The Council are pleased to recognise the marked ability shown in many of the studies in Oil, but thery would call attention to the necessity for greater thoroughness and delicacy of perception of forms in the Drawings. Further they regret that they have again had to withhold the Stuart Prize, partly on the same grounds given last year, viz., that in the special qualities desderated – composition and design – the Competitors are sadly deficient, and also on account of excessive carelessness in the delineation of the figure.” The Visitors to the RSA Life School during his time were; J Lawton Wingate; David W Stevenson; William Hole and Robert McGregor (1889-90); J Lawton Wingate; David W Stevenson; William Hole and Robert McGregor (1890-91) and J Lawton Wingate; Robert McGregor; David W Stevenson and William Hole (1891-2)
