Holyrood Winter (recto)/ A Welsh Castle (verso)
Artist: Wilson, William, OBE RSA RSW · 1905-1972
The recto face has been etched.
The verso face has been etched.
The ‘Welsh Castle’ does not appear to be a faithful record of a specific castle but R.H.Rodger has identified the detailing of the entrance gateway and the general massing atop a rocky outcrop as bearing strong comparison with Harlech Castle in Gwynedd, North-West Wales, which probably served as Wilson’s ultimate inspirational model. The plate has been reduced down the right hand edge of 'A Welsh castle' (cf GMA 2259 which has a plate mark size of 30.,0 x 33.0cm and shows a stretch of shore with a row of cottages behind down the right hand edge of the composition).
