Italy 1953-54
Artist: Michie, David Alan Redpath, Professor, OBE RSA RGI FRSA(Scot) · 1928-2015
David Michie was awarded a Travelling Scholarship from Edinburgh College of Art which took him to France and Italy in 1953-54 in company with his college friend and fellow travelling scholar John Houston OBE RSA (1930-2008) who remained a lifelong friend. Their travels took them to the following destinations; Paris, Milan, Florence, Rome, Orvieto, Anticoli Corrado, Naples, Ravenna, Venice. Whilst in Florence and Milan they were in the company of W G Gillies OBE RSA(1898-1973).

Leaves 53r-55r inc are probably Saracenic motifs from objects seen in the Museo Stibbert in Florence (vide related study in David Michie, A Sketchbook, pub D Michie, 2014, p.15)
Leaves 32r, 33r and 61r are probably to do with harvesting olives near Florence (vide related study in David Michie, A Sketchbook, pub D Michie, 2014, p.14)
Leaf 69r is probably a portrait of the artist’s wife, Eileen
Leaves 73v and 74r are probably details copied from carvings on Etruscan stone coffins, a collection of which were viewed by Michie in the Archaeological Museum in Florence
