On Canna
Artist: McKenzie Smith, Ian, Dr, OBE CBE RSA PPRSA RSW · b. 1935
The artist has aimed at a visual distillation of the three elements of sky, land and sea. This painting shows the influence of Zen Philosophy and the work of the Japanese artist Kenzo Okada. See Ian McKenzie Smith's comments in hanging file "Articles on Painters". This painting was inspired by a painting holiday spent on Canna in 1985 but the artist had also visited Canna in the 1960's and the Canna motif recurs in various paintings particularly in the 1980's.
