Maltese Venus II
Sculptor: Ross, Alastair Robertson, RSA · b. 1941
Letter from Alastair Ross to the Collections Assistant dated 2006-12-13 (in Alastair Ross' file) "This carving was executed, without preparatory/ drawings or maquette, as a demonstration piece to a class/ on one of my visits to Malta, whilst an invited tutor at/ the School of Scottish Artists in Malta between 1991 and 1993/ - 1992 if my memory serves me correctly." he also discussed the medium of "Maltese globigerina limestone....I greatly enjoyed carving this material. The very bedrock/ foundations of the Maltese Islands comprise of this beautiful/ abundant, easily carved, honey - coloured stone." Alastair Ross has subsequently explained that this rock is amongst the youngest limestone in the world so it is very soft to carve but it hardens over time. Therefore any dust deposits that are noticed on the plinth from the sculpture are not degradation of the stone but part of the natural hardening process.
