The identity of the sitter was provided by Robin H.Rodger, RSA Documentation Officer, 2023-01-30 on the basis of a man of this name being an artist's colourman in Edinburgh at around the time the work was painted. It has a sense of the amateur to it and this is reflected in the lack of any exhibition record for this man at the RSA and nor does he appear as a student of the RSA Life Class
