Trees in Leaf
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
An apparently unfinished oil. It appears to be based on a small pencil sketch, G.1991.639.
The study of trees forms a constant throughout Gillies' career and reveal a variety of approaches to how he treats them.
Here the composition is built around the central tree which provides its anchor. The branches in full leaf are painted in a manner more reminiscent of the single leaves of a shrub or pot-plant and contribute to the overall unity of the composition, mirroring the shape of patches of shadow on the ground and clouds in the sky
