Versailles
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
Gillies' first experience of France was whilst on active service during the First World War during which time he was both gassed and wounded.
In 1923 he returned in peacetime on an Edinburgh College of Art Travelling Scholarship before moving on to Italy in 1924. He returned again in 1927.
A decade later and this time travelling with John Maxwell and Harold Morton, he took in the Exposition Universelle in Paris before visiting Chartres, St Cloud and Versailles.
