Still life with jug, apples and feathers in a vase
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The still life has been painted over an earlier landscape painting.
Undated, the work is probably from the 1940s and shows a shift from the limited palette and somewhat abstracted approach to his still lives of the 1930s but before the heightened distortion of the planar surface with its tilted table tops which he exploited from the 1950s.
The red dish provides a strong contrast tot he green apples, and overall the work is an essay in controlled colour harmony with a subtle range of blue and purple tones.
