The Pentlands from Fountainside

Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973

The landscape is divided into a series of horizontal bands each taken on their own providing an abstraction but when brought together providing a recognizable scene.

The painting reflects similar approaches which Gillies was making at the same time to his still life paintings where the painterly qualities over ride all other characteristics and concerns.

The painting had a particular resonance for Gillies as it is one of his oils known to have been hanging in his home at Temple at the time of this death.

G.1991.643 is a preparatory study for the present work.

A near identical oil (30 x 53cm), dated to c.1950, featured (cat.28) in The Scottish Gallery's exhibition "William Gillies: The Visionary Painter" (June 2023) and is illustrated in colour in the accompanying publication.
