East Linton
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
A view from the east bank of the River Tyne, looking roughly north-west towards the distinctive spire of the former Church of Scotland St Andrew's Church. At left the arched bridge carries Station Road across the river towards Bridgend.
The painting is based on a preparatory study in pencil which must have been executed en plein air (RSA G.1991.177).
St Andrew's Church was closed in 1959 when it merged with Prestonkirk congregation and the building was sold in 1996 for domestic use. The cottage at mid distance right was demolished before 2023.
The composition is exaggerated in its height and shows the influence of overseas artists such as Lyonel Feininger.
