Portrait of the artist's mother
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The artist's widowed mother and his two sisters, with whom he lived, not surprisingly feature as the subject of a number of paintings and drawings which he executed of them over the years.
Some such as this were simple record sketches, others were in preparation for working into larger paintings.
Indeed, Gillies' earliest recorded oil painting was a portrait of his mother, painted when he was just 18 years old.
