One of a number of sketches made by Gillies on a visit to the coastal town of Nairn in the north of Scotland in 1965, some of which subsequently served as preparatory studies for larger oil paintings.
The present work has been identified as one such; for Gillies' subsequent oil painting Nairn Beach (G.1992.048).
