Ruins, with Figures, Cattle, Sheep, and Goats
Artist: van Bloemen, Pieter · 1657-1720
The painting was originally attributed to Jan Asselyn in early documentation but it appears to have formed a pendant piece for the painting by Van Bloemen in the NGS 'Landscape with a Herdsman and Animals in front of the Baths of Diocletian, Rome' (NG1014) which was also part of the Veitch Bequest, was transferred to NGS by RSA in 1910 and was originally cited as being by Jan Asselyn and given the title 'Roman Ruins'. Its reattribution to Van Bloemen suggests that the piece in the RSA collection is also by Van Bloemen. A Dutch PhD Student, Manja Rottink who examined the painting in January 2005 also suggested that stylistically it was probably by Van Bloemen or possibly by Jacob de Heusch and that the RSA painting and the NGS painting seem to be by the same hand.
