Untitled

Artist: Malik, Usman · b. 1984

The artist was in Italy from September to October 2011 on a John Kinross Travel Scholarship.Studied Old masters in the Uffizi. Took subjects from the Koran, eg the Queen of Sheba and used renaissance-inspired imagery to depict an episode. Includes non-specific Arabic script (to reference Islam and the non-figurative approach to art). Used the idea of lettering from renaissance paintings eg labels with inscriptions (even noticed an Arabic one on one painting). Flowers are stamped on the surface – gives the decorative effect of latticework.
