Artist: Imlach, Hannah · b. 1989Artist, collaborative: Cossentino, Diego · b. 1980

The artist was in Italy: Sept – Nov 2011 on a John Kinross Travel Scholarship. She had a small exhibition when in Florence – in a classroom of the language school over a weekend; Hannah Imlach – Water Kite, Istituto Michelangelo, via Ghibellina 88, Firenze, 16th – 18th November 2011, her first solo exhibition. Brought a cardboard maquette of her geometric construction, the shape inspired by objects from the Galileo Museum. Photographs of her sculpture on the river Arno. Had help getting it in situ on the water from a local fisherman. It then drifted with the current. She worked with a photographer (Diego Cossantino). She sees an opportunity for a sister project in Scotland with her sculpture concept. Hannah Imlach and Claudia de la Pena worked together, both on the banks of the Arno. They felt more comfortable working together – for mutual support. According to the artist's statement on he rwebsite; "Hannah Imlach’s practice concerns the nature of our interaction with the environment. Working in constant reference to the landscape, she focuses on how a piece of art may be involved in the simplest yet most overlooked experiences with nature.

Creating relational objects or sculptural ‘tools’, her works aim to heighten awareness and shift perceptions of our surroundings. These pieces can be site-specific or transient, focusing on a subtle interaction, juxtaposing different elements or prompting a narrative. They often take on recognisable forms acting as a shelter, boat, jacket, kite or optical tool. As a group of belongings they suggest the presence of a future dweller with an alternative ecological perspective, living a more nomadic, uninhibited and sustainable existence."
