Sculptures on Florence Weir
Artist: de la Pena, Claudia · b. 1988
Artist was in Italy: Sept – Nov 2011 on a John Kinross Travel Scholarship. Made plaster casts from objects found during walks along the river Arno. Did a one-week project – moved plaster cast sculptures to different parts of the river and observed them gradually get consumed (by the Friday they were all gone). Took daily photographs. Brought nothing back with her – everything was relevant to the place.
The Bartolini exhibition at the Accademia was a catalyst for this work. The example of using plaster casts alongside/instead of originals. Seeing the visible plaster cast joins and the changed quality of the artwork through the use of a different material was significant. Claudia de la Pena and Hannah Imlach worked together, both on the banks of the Arno. They felt more comfortable working together – for mutual support.
