9/11

Artist: Findlay-Dons, Carla Jane · b. 1982

The work was inspired by the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York's financial district on 2001-09-11 when two aircraft operated by American Airlines [UA11 and UA175) were hi-jacked by terrorists linked to al-Qaeda and deliberately crashed into the towers. The morning's terror extended to a further two aircraft being similarily targetted. One of these [UA77] was crashed into The Pentagon, whilst the other [UA93] was targetted for the Capitol in Washington DC but crashed after the passengers stormed the hi-jackers before it reached its intended destination. The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people both aboard the aircraft and on the ground, leaving about another 25,000 injured. 9/11 led to President George W Bush (b.1946) declaring the 'War on Terroism' and the subsequent US invasion of Afghanistan which had ignored earlier requests by the USA to destroy al-Qaeda on its territory. Al-Qaeda's leader, Osama bin Laden (1957-2011) was credited a sthe mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks and became the USA's No.1 most wanted. He was finally killed when US special forces stormed the safe house in which he had been hiding in Pakistan, on 2011-05-02, on the orders of President Barack Obama (b.1961).
