Arthur
Artist: Rodger, Willie, RSA RGI DUniv · 1930-2018
Rodger worked on a number of collaborative projects with Peacock Printmakers, established in Aberdeen in 1974 by a group of artists led by the sitter of this print, Arthur Watson, who later became Secretary and then President of the Royal Scottish Academy.
Inspiration for this print came from the fact that the artist admired and was fascinated by the patterned jumpers Arthur Watson wore (knitted by the sitter’s mother) and liked the way Arthur set himself while seated on a stool.
The print was worked up from colour photographs taken at Peacock Printmakers in Aberdeen during a working visit. The copy exhibited at the RSA in 1989 was purchased by the sitter and gifted to Aberdeen Art Gallery.
Another copy resides in Perth Museum and Art Gallery collection and was gifted by the artist in 1989/90.
3 proofs were gifted by the artist to the sitter, one of which is this print.
