Abstract composition
[creator]: Cumming, James William Hunter, RSA · 1922-1991
The orientation of the recto sketch is unclear but the two large blue shapes appear to form a natural base and its orientation for accessioning purposes has been based on this. The appearance of the aeroplane motif on the verso face is a reminder of Cumming’s time in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and from 1941-45 in the RAF which saw him undertake training at Terrell in Texas in 944-45 and passing out as a pilot. Firth (op cit., p.13) describes this period as; “undoubtedly the most formative experience of his life so far.”
