Abstract Pattern Incorporating Flags
[creator]: Cumming, James William Hunter, RSA · 1922-1991
The orientation of the recto sketch is unclear but there appears to be a row of pseudo lettering across the bottom and its orientation for accessioning purposes has been based on this.
The main central motif includes a number of flag symbols. Firth (op cit., pl.18, pp 64-65) reproduces a watercolour of 1985 (private collection) based on similar motifs taken from the International Code of Signals for Mariners. Of it, Richard Hayes writes; “It was an appropriate subject for Cumming who was an enthusiastic communicator and a vivid raconteur. The painting is one of a small group of works by the artist representing symbols of communication…….is a departure from the figurative style of Cumming’s work and is an example of his preoccupation with precise geometry and his pleasure in formalised arrangements.”
