Marietta - a Roman Girl

Sculptor: Hutchison, John, RSA · 1832-1910

Produced in Rome (see inscription to reverse). In 1861 he exhibited a similarly titled piece to the Diploma Work at the RSA "A Roman girl - marble bust" catalogue number 812 and at the RGI "A Roman Girl-Bust in Marble" catalogue number 880 and at the RA "A Roman Girl" catalogue number 1124, in 1865 he also exhibited at the RA "A Roman Girl; marble" catalogue number 1066. These may have been the same piece as the Diploma Work although throughout his career he produced many 'Roman' female figures for example as late as 1902 he exhibited "Study of a Roman Girl" catalogue number 400 at the RSA.

The 1861 exhibit (cat 812) cannot be the present work, as it was sold for sixty pounds during the exhibition to the Royal Association for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in Scotland (RSA Sales Book 1861-1863, p.15)
