English Silk brocade, Renaissance

The study is contained within a drawn black ink border and is titled by hand in black ink below the image. Stylistically this would appear to be a student piece from Cumming’s days at Edinburgh College of Art, probably dating to his first year when he would have been introduced to historical styles as part of the general curriculum, and based on an illustration from a book such as The Grammar of Ornament by Owen Jones (b.1809, d.1874) first published in 1854, or similar.
