One of four prints after Allan's Rome sketches published by Sandby with extensive letterpress notes in 1780
Five of Allan's original ink and wash drawings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1779 (cat.4) "Five drawings representing the Amusements, Manners etc., of the Carnival at Rome" and during 1780-81 four of these were published with extensive letterpress notes by Sandby. Allan had just returned to Edinburgh after spending thirteen years in Rome.
