a monochrome study after Raeburn's original oil painting for copying as a stipple engraving published February 1796 ,for an impression of which vide BM 1877,0714.39. There are several minor differences in Beugo's sketch from the original painting. These include the surgeon's cap being raised clear of his right eyebrow, the lack of a fob from his waistband, and a more pronounced angle to the tilt of the bow.
