Sketches for a Proposed Memorial to Columbus

Architect: Gleave, Joseph Lea, RSA · 1907-1965

Gleave's sketches were part of a competition organised by the Pan American Union to design a memorial in the form of a lighthouse to Christopher Columbus in the Dominican Republic. The first round of the competition was in 1929 and the second round was in 1931 when Gleave won the competition and was awarded a $10,000 prize. Work began on the monument in 1948 but it was not completed. In 1934 he exhibited at the RSA "Columbus Memorial Lighthouse Competition - first premiated design" catalogue numbers 613, 614 and 615. In 1948 he also exhibited two works at the RGI catalogue numbers 611 and 612 "International Memorial to Christopher Columbus" and in 1968 catalogue numbers 494, 495 and 496 "The International Monument to Christopher Columbus".
