Edge of the Wood

Artist: Reeves, Philip Thomas Langford, RSA PPRSW RGI RE · 1931-2017

A similarly titled piece "Edge of the Wood" was exhibited at the RSA in 1973 catalogue number 375, this may have been the same piece as the Diploma Work. The artist is not certain if the Diploma Work was exhibited prior to being deposited in 1981. There is an early drypoint on a similar theme to the Diploma Work entitled "Edge of the Wood" dated 1956, reproduced in the catalogue "Philip Reeves at 70" (2001 Talbot Rice Gallery and Hunterian Art Gallery) The theme of 'edges' or overlapping masses has been explored by Reeves in other works for example "Edge of the Shore" exhibited at the RGI in 1973. In a letter from the artist to the RSA dated 2003-12-04 he explains the genesis of his Diploma Work "The location is Gloucestershire....I did/ a series of small paintings and sketch book/ drawings prior to the painting "Edge of the/ Wood" which depicts a small wood on/ Cleeve Hill, which is the highest point/ of the Cotswolds." (letter from the artist to the RSA dated 2003-12-04 is in hanging file "Articles on Painters")
