Hill was only 19 when the first Part was issued. His Sketches of Scenery in Perthshire remains the most ambitious early publication using the medium of lithography in Scotland
The lithographs were originally issued in 6 Parts over a period from October 1821 until c.1823. Each Part comprised 5 prints hand stitched into a printed paper wrapper. Part 4 publication advertised as for June 1822 “with parts 5 & 6 to complete following thereafter in quick succession” (Perthshire Courier 29 March 1822) but in effect did not appear until September 1822 (Perthshire Courier 30 Aug 1822 “will be published in a few days”) comprising; Loch Tummel, Fall of the Tummel, Upper Fall of Bruar, Vale of Atholl, Pass of Killiecrankie
