Sketches of Scenery in Perthshire; Perth seen from Barnhill

Printer: Hullmandel, Charles Joseph · b. 1789Printmaker: Hill, David Octavius, RSA · 1802-1870Publisher: Hill, Thomas

Hill was only 19 when the first Part was issued. His Sketches of Scenery in Perthshire remains the most ambitious early publication using the medium of lithography in Scotland

The lithographs were originally issued in 6 Parts over a period from October 1821 until c.1823. Each Part comprised 5 prints hand stitched into a printed paper wrapper. Parts 5 & 6 no contemporary account traced of their issue but probably late 1822 or early 1823. Evidence from a set bound in their original wrappers (private collection) gives Part 5 comprising; Perth seen from Barnhill, View of the Tummel with Faskally, Vale of the Garry Atholl, Athol House, Castle Campbell and Part 6 comprising; The River Tay from the Western Part of Kinnoull Cliff, Murthly Castle, Craig Hall, Ochtertyre, and Doune Castle.
