Six compositional sketches for landscapes
Artist: Hill, David Octavius, RSA · 1802-1870
The sketches appear on blank faces of a folded letter, the address was that lived in by Hill in 1836 and 1837. The sender was George Watson, PRSA (1767-1837), the first President of the [Royal] Scottish Academy from 1826 until his death in 1837. The Mr Nicholson, cited as his deputy (ie deputising in Watson’s absence as President) was probably the Academy’s first Secretary, William Nicholson RSA (1781-1844) whom Hill succeeded in 1830.
