Compositional sketch of High Street, Edinburgh, looking towards John Knox’s House
Artist: Hill, David Octavius, RSA · 1802-1870
The sketch may date to the earlier part of Hill's career. He made a couple of sketches of the Old High Street during the great conflagration which occurred there in November 1824, the fire having broken out in the workshop of James Kirkwood & Son, vide NGS D2464a-c inc. for Hill's on-the-spot drawings. The view was reviisted by Hill and Robert Adamson in 1845 when they took two calotypes of a near identical composition plus a third showing John Knox's House, which was then under threat of demolition, in close up.(vide Ward and Stevenson, Printed Light, 1986, fig 118 and context p.131., also Stevenson, Catalogue of Hill and Adamson calotypes in the collection of the SNPG, p.189, Edinburgh 1-3 inc.)
