Compositional sketch of Taymouth Castle from the South-East

Artist: Hill, David Octavius, RSA · 1802-1870

Hill, along with Thomas Duncan RSA, was present at Taymouth Castle in September 1842 when Queen Victoria and HRH Prince Albert spent a couple of nights as the guests of the Marquis of Breadalbane, during their first State Visit to Scotland. At the 1845 RSA Annual exhibition Hill exhibited Taymouth Castle from the East, painted on the spot, Sept 1842 (cat 278) and Taymouth Castle with Highland Encampment, Queen’s visit, 1842 (cat 279). The present drawing has a few notes added, suggesting it was intended as a working drawing to inform a painting. He had also painted Feu de Joie, Taymouth Castle c.1835 (now Perth Museum and Art Gallery 6/101) which was engraved for The Land of Burns, Volume 1 (facing page 95)
