Artist: Duncan, Thomas, ARA RSA · 1807-1845

Duncan’s finished painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1840 (cat 582) and at the RSA the following year (cat.158) lent by Alexander Hill, who had the picture engraved by Frederick Bacon (pub.1845). Duncan executed numerous preparatory studies in various media, examples of which are to be found in NGS and Perth Museum and Art Gallery; where are a slight pen and ink compositional sketch, an oil study (unfinished) of the Prince’s horse (ref. 1999.439), and a small compositional oil study of the whole composition (ref 2008.3, formerly in the Hunter-Blair collection) as well as a signed proof copy of the engraving.
