Fighting Your Demons
Artist: Warchol, Aleksandra · b. 1999
The piece was inspired by the artist's response to visual stimuli on her 2023 RSA John Kinross Scholarship to Italy in particular three pieces of marble sculpture; Michelangelo's 'The Genius of Victory' (1532-4) in the Palazzo Vecchio, Giambologna's 'Florence Triumphant Over Pisa' (c.1570) and Vincenzo Danti's 'Honour Triumphant Over Deceit' (1561) both in the National Museum of Bargello.
The artist recorded in her sketchbook beside her sketches of the last two pieces above;
"Some of the poses were very drastic. The scenes were brutal and some of the figures were humiliated and debased. The power relations/ hierarchy was marked very clear with some figures being above others.
In these types of sculptures nakedness was very intriguing. It emphasises the humiliating effect for some of the figures. For the triumphant figures it adds to their power and makes them look desirable."
