On the Ramblas

Artist: Michie, David Alan Redpath, Professor, OBE RSA RGI FRSA(Scot) · 1928-2015

Painting was inspired by the artist's visit to Barcelona. and by the famous street "Las Ramblas" In a letter to the RSA dated 2003-04-19 the artist provides the following commentary on the painting "I visited Barcelona in 1970 and the/ painting derives from impressions gained in/ the Ramblas at that time. The Street was/ a cacophany of sights and sounds, such a/ clatter of images. There were flowerstalls/ birdcages, kiosks selling hot chocolate and/ ice creams, young women were striding out immpressively, old men were walking slowly in/ thick carpet slippers clutching newspapers/ There was a strongly patterned paving on the ground/ The girl in my painting is oblivious to all/ this and the baby she is clearly in charge of/ she has no eyes to see but concentrates only/ on the ice cream she is holding." (See hanging file "Articles on Painters" for letter)
