Untitled (Macabre Scene With Man and Demonic Figure)

Artist: Duncan, John, RSA · 1866-1945

Duncan produced finely etched illustrative prints during the mid to late 1880s of which this is an example. Another dated ‘April 1886’ is in Album 4 (19r) in the RSA collections also signed ‘John T Duncan.’

Duncan incorporated the initial ‘T’ into his signature around this time, denoting his mother’s maiden name ‘Thomson.’

The present work suggests an awareness of the work of Sir Joseph Noel Paton RSA in its use of fantastical nudes and putti.
