Statue of Guiseppe Mazzini, Pisa
Artist: Michie, David Alan Redpath, Professor, OBE RSA RGI FRSA(Scot) · 1928-2015
The work depicts the white marble statue of Guiseppe Mazzini on the north bank of the River Arno in Pisa, looking North-West from the Lungarno Mediceo into Piazza Guiseppe Mazzini. The statue was erected in 1883 and is dated in Roman numerals on the plinth. Mazzini was born in Genoa in 1805 and died in Pisa in 1872 aged 66. He was a political activist whose life was spent in the cause of the unification of Italy.
The height of the plinth and the statue have been greatly exaggerated in Michie's depiction. Today (2022) the view is instantly recognizeable down to the tree and lamppost (now with an electric light replacement). The statue stands in the centre of a network of paths and low box hedges.
