Inverness, With The Palace Cinema
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
Gillies served as Assistant Art Master at Inverness High School from 1924-09-24 to 1925-08-31 and it is possible that the present work dates to this period.
No further visits are recorded however in the summers of 1931 and 1933 he was in Inverness-shire and it is possible that he visited the town again then.
The handling of the drawing suggests a later date however, and the Palace Cinema which features so prominently was not opened until 1939, suggesting that this does indeed relate to a later and previously unrecorded visit to Inverness.
