Street Scene From a Window in Willowbrae Road
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
In the summer of 1929 Gillies moved with his widowed mother and his two sisters Janet and Emma from their native Haddington to 162 Willowbrae Road in Edinburgh, a semi detached two-storey property on a raised elevation.
Gillies painted several oils of views from or close to the family home.
Emma Gillies died in hospital in 1936 during their time at Willowbrae and in 1939 with the threat of War looming Gillies took his mother and surviving sister to the village of Temple in Midlothian
