Baillie, William (Bill) James Laidlaw, CBE PPRSA PPRSW

1923 – 2011

William Baillie studied at Edinburgh College of Art as an Andrew Grant Scholar from 1941 - 1950. He then proceeded to study at Moray House College of Education from 1950 - 1951 his studies having been interrupted in the nineteen forties by war serice in the Far East. This early experience of the East and India in particular was to have a strong influence on his art. In 1960 he became a lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art in the School of Drawing and Painting and in 1968 he was appointed Senior Lecturer eventually becoming Depute Head of the school in 1974 a post that he held until 1977. In 1974 he was elected President of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours holding this post until 1988 and in 1990 he became the18th President of the RSA retiring from this position in 1998. He has exhibited at the RSA from 1951 and became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1968 and an Academician in 1979.
